November 28, 2006 -- CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Danaher Industrial Controls Group (DICG) announced a new technical webinar on the BiSS serial protocol for absolute encoder communications. BiSS (Bidirectional Synchronous Serial Interface) is the newest and fastest encoder communications protocol. It was designed to take full advantage of the higher precision of absolute encoders and provide improved positioning precision and control response, and extremely smooth speed control, even at low speeds. Unlike proprietary protocols, BiSS doesn’t lock users into a particular brand of encoders at prices set on the supplier’s terms.

The webinar covers everything that engineers need to know in order to integrate BiSS-based encoders with motors and drives, including wiring, clocking, diagnostics, registers, and comparison to other leading protocols. There is no cost for the webinar but online registration is required at www.feedbackdevices.com/biss.

The BiSS webinar is part of a campaign launched recently by Danaher Industrial Controls called the "Campaign for Absolute Freedom," which seeks to accelerate the adoption of open protocols for absolute encoders. The campaign website, www.feedbackdevices.com/biss, allows engineers to petition drive manufacturers to support the BiSS protocol on their drives.

BiSS runs faster than current alternatives, and it allows for remote encoder diagnostics. BiSS can be configured for point-to-point use, with one controller (master) and one encoder (slave), or with one master and multiple slaves. This can significantly reduce wiring expense. Unlike analog protocols, the BiSS is all digital, avoiding the need for A/D converters and allowing long cable lengths.

More information on the webinar is available from Danaher Industrial Controls at 800-873-8731 and www.feedbackdevices.com/biss.
