11 January 2007 -- SINGAPORE: Heavy rains fell over the central and south western parts of Singapore on Thursday.

In just five hours, from 1.30 pm to 6.30 pm, the rainfall measured was 103 mm.

The average amount of rainfall recorded for the month of January in previous years is 241mm.

Ground crew from PUB has been monitoring the Thomson Road area since 4 pm.

The water level sensor, which has been installed there since 22 December last year, triggered off an alert when the water level reached a critical level at 5.50 pm.

PUB ground crew immediately informed the eight nurseries along Thomson Road to take precautions.

The water level in the drain rose rapidly and flooded the low-lying carpark in front of Goodwood Florist and Candy Greenhouse & Flowers at about 6 pm.

The flood waters rose to about 150mm in the carpark but receded within about 10 minutes.

There was no flooding in the nurseries, Olive Road and Joan Road.

Last month, Singapore saw a record 765.9 mm of rainfall (as of 28 December), making it the wettest December since 1869. - CNA/ir
