November 07, 2005 -- Cupertino, CA--SpeedInfo Inc., a private company based in Cupertino, Calif., has deployed an additional 50
DVSS-100 lightweight, solar powered radar sensors in the San Francisco Bay metro area. With this deployment, SpeedInfo?s real-time traffic speed coverage now includes over 900 miles of limited access highways in the San Francisco Bay Area. The additional sensors have been deployed to fill gaps in loop detector coverage, and to support high traffic congestion points. Completed in less than one week, this rapid response to customer needs highlights the core strength of our technology and business model.

Working closely with Caltrans and the San Francisco Bay Area?s Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), SpeedInfo has deployed 300 sensors as part of a demonstration project for the Intelligent Transportation Systems World Congress, and the MTC 511 traveler information service is using the data to improve system performance for Bay Area users. This comprehensive real time traffic data will be demonstrated at the ITS World Congress, Nov. 7-10, in San Francisco, CA.

According to Will Kempton, Director of Caltrans, "The SpeedInfo Project is a great example of government and industry working together to provide better service to the public. Their speed detection equipment is simple to install, reliable, and accurate. SpeedInfo has significantly improved the traffic data coverage in the San Francisco Bay Area."

?Our partnership with SpeedInfo has been terrific,? said Steve Heminger, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. ?They?ve been very responsive and filled in virtually all of our coverage gaps on major highways, making our industry-leading 511 service even more useful to drivers and traffic operations.?

The SpeedInfo network operates 24 hours a day, and measures average traffic speeds more than a million times per day. The measurements are taken several times per minute and sent to the SpeedInfo Traffic Data Server via the Cingular Wireless® data network with virtually no latency, and then formatted for delivery to data partners via the Internet.

About 511

Part of a national rollout of 511 service, the Bay Area?s 511 phone and Web system was launched in December 2002 through a partnership between MTC, Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol and dozens of transit operators. The Bay Area is the largest metropolitan area in the country to activate a 511 system. The service currently averages about 90,000 calls per week.

511 is the Bay Area?s one-stop resource for free traffic, transit, ridesharing and bicycling information. Much like 411 or 911, the toll-free 511 phone service is an easy-to-remember number. Callers can get the most current reports on road conditions and traffic incidents, as well as fare and schedule information from over 40 public transportation providers and 20 paratransit operators, plus information about carpooling, vanpooling and bicycling.

MTC is the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
