29 June 2006 -- Avago Technologies has introduced a series of high-speed optocouplers in stretched small outline (SSO) packages with two new features: they are as much as 50% smaller than conventional dual-inline packages while providing up to 8mm of creepage and clearance to meet stringent IEC, UL and CSA reinforced safety and insulation regulatory requirements. Applications for the SSO6 and SSO8 (6 and 8 pins, respectively) packages include digital logic ground isolation, line receivers, isolation for analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue convertors, computer-peripheral interfaces, and intelligent power module interfaces for motor drives. Today's electrical safety standards specify creepage and clearance.

Creepage is a spacing distance measured over a surface, such as the surface of an optocoupler.

Clearance is the shortest distance through air, such as between pins of an optocoupler.

Many IEC equipment standards now call for 8mm creepage and clearance distances.

The clearance and creepage specifications of these SSO6 and SSO8 packages make them suitable for safety-critical applications including electronic equipment for use in power installations.

'Many of Avago's customers have been seeking ways to design smaller PC boards that can meet international safety standards', said Kheng-Jam Lee, Worldwide Marketing Manager for Isolation Products in Avago Technologies' Optical Communication Solutions Division.

'We will meet the size and safety requirements of our customers by offering an expanding range of optocoupler products in the widely accepted SSO6 and SSO8 package configurations'.

The ACPL-P454, ACPL-W454 and ACPL-K453 are 1Mbaud (megabaud)optocouplers.

They feature 15kV/us minimum common mode transient immunity at 1500V common-mode voltage (VCM) and operation over the 0 to +70C temperature range.

The ACPL-P611 and ACPL-W611 are 10Mbaud optocouplers.

They feature 10kV/us minimum CMR at 1000V VCM, with a low 5mA input current capability, and both AC and DC performance are specified over -40 to +85C.

The ACPL-W60L and ACPL-K63L are 15Mbaud low-voltage (3.3V) optocouplers.

They feature low power consumption, 15kV/us minimum CMR at 1kV VCM, compatibility with low-voltage TTL and CMOS circuitry, and 5mA input current capability.

Both AC and DC performance are specified over -40 to +85C.

The 'P' package is a stretched SO6 (6-pin) surface-mount package with dimensions of 4.58 x 9.7 x 3.18mm, suitable for single-channel optocouplers.

It has 7mm clearance and 8mm creepage.

The 'W' package is a stretched SO6 surface-mount package with dimensions of 4.58 x 11.5 x 3.180mm, suitable for single-channel optocouplers.

It is specified for 8mm clearance and creepage.

The 'K' package is a stretched SO8 (8-pin) surface-mount package with dimensions of 5.80 x 11.5 x 3.180mm, suitable for single- and two-channel optocouplers.

It is also specified for 8mm clearance and creepage.

All package versions are lead-free and meet RoHS requirements.

Samples and production quantities of the high-speed digital optocouplers in the stretched SO packages range are available now through Avago's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners.
