Accurate temp sensor suits 65nm process tech

30 Aug 2006 -- Maxim Integrated Products has introduced the MAX6689, a ±1°C accurate, 6-channel temperature sensor designed for next-generation 65nm process technology. It accurately measures its own temperature and the temperature of up to six external locations such as CPUs, memory, GPUs or other heat-sensitive locations, the company said.

Available in small 20-pin QSOP and TSSOP packages, the device allows the user to program the temperature threshold of alarm outputs. For design flexibility, these outputs can serve as an interrupt or can be connected to a system fan or other thermal-management circuitry. The device's hardwired STBY function eliminates false alerts at startup. Maxim said the combination of high precision, small size and high flexibility makes this temperature sensor suitable for notebook applications, where accurate temperature readings of multiple locations are critical.

The MAX6689 communicates through a SMBus interface and operates from a 3-5.5V supply-voltage range. It consumes 500µA of supply current, which is reduced to 30µA in standby mode, the company said. The device is specified over the -40°C to 125°C temperature range. Prices start at $4.13 (2,500-up, FOB USA).
