FREMONT, Calif., March 16, 2006 -- PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a provider of digital imaging, specialty lighting and optical detection technologies, announced the introduction of the new DigiPyro, what it said is the world's first digital pyrodetector, a pyroelectric infrared sensor for home and industrial motion detection applications.
The DigiPyro PYD 1998 dual element pyrodetector, the first in a series of digital pyrodetectors from the company, provides OEMs with clear performance advantages over traditional analog pyrodetectors and reduces the cost and space requirements associated with analog circuitry, according to PerkinElmer.
Until the introduction of the DigiPyro, traditional detection instruments relied on analog signal processing for motion-detection applications. To process an analog signal, these detectors require additional system components such as amplifiers, resistors, capacitors for electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering, and analog-to-digital converters, all components that add to system costs without improving performance.
While design considerations are different for each customer's equipment, indications are that system costs due to fewer components can be reduced by up to 20 percent, the company said. Impaired by cell phone and other EMI signals, traditional analog pyrodetectors are easily disrupted, making them less reliable for use in home and industrial settings.
There is significantly improved EMI immunity with the new DigiPyro -- tests show that the power supply rejection ratio is improved by 30 dB, a 32-fold improvement over the traditional analog pyrodetector technology, according to PerkinElmer.
