Intel has decided not to have 3G support in its Centrino platform. The next Centrino, dubbed Santa Rosa, was to offer both Wi-Fi and a 3G enhancement called High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), Intel.
"We won't be including it," a company spokesman said. "There is not enough of a business case. There is not sufficient return on investment to continue."
Late January 2007, Intel had introduced 'Kedron', the 802.11n-compatible wireless networking module that's a key component of Centrino, 'Santa Rosa'. The codenamed Kedron is now called Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN.
The card is based on a draft version of the 802.11n specification. Asus, Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link and Netgear are supporting Intel's Connect with Centrino scheme.
"Integrating wireless-N technology into notebook computers based on Centrino Duo with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor delivers the speed, coverage and multi-tasking abilities needed for consumers to enjoy their home networking and digital entertainment," said Intel direct of wireless marketing Dave Hofer.
"Additionally, access points that are identified by our new 'Connect with Centrino' logo assure consumers that they are purchasing a compatible wireless-N system", said Hofer.
