12 July 2006 -- Until now, 0603 thermistors provided reasonably good protection of power transistors, diodes and ICs. According to passives manufacturer Murata, that protection just got better and smaller with a 61% reduction in occupied substrate space.
Murata has introduced the 0402-sized PRF15 (1,0 x 0,5 x 0,5 mm) to augment the current 0603 and larger. The resistance value is 470 O ±50% with temperature sensing values of 105°C, 115°C and 125°C.
The reduction in volume of the chips has the added advantage of reducing their thermal capacity, in turn increasing the sensitivity to temperature change and reducing any hysteresis.
