12/01/2007 -- Cllr Damian Ryan has called on Mayo County Council to reinstate a digital speed sensor at Cross National School in South Mayo or install permanent traffic calming measures in the area.

At this Monday’s meeting of the Ballinrobe electoral area committee, Cllr Ryan said parents of children attending Cross National School have complimented the council on installing the digital sensor, which was very effective at slowing passing motorists.

Cllr Ryan said the device was very effective on the busy stretch of road which is used by motorists travelling to Galway adding that the proximity of the junction to the road adds to the danger for those accessing the school.

Numerous parents have complimented the council on erecting the sign, Cllr Ryan reported, asking that it be reinstated. Otherwise permanent traffic calming measures will have to be installed, the Fianna Fáil Cllr added.

Mr Kieran Shally, senior executive engineer for the area, said the digital speed sensors are moved around the county by the council’s road safety officer who has three or four at his disposal. The engineer explained that the sensor won’t be a permanent fixture in any place, the idea of them being to highlight speed across the county at different locations.

But Mr Shally did confirm that he has applied for funding for traffic calming at the south side of Cross village.
