December 6, 2006 --  The guidance that weather forecasts offer on ultraviolet exposure is a rough estimate that tries to cover the population as a whole. The Oregon Scientific Personal UV Monitor (www.oregonscientific.com) makes the forecast personal. Users program the $30 device, left, with information about skin tone and any sunscreen that has been applied, and the monitor, using a photo cell to measure light conditions, starts a countdown. When the safe limit of exposure has been reached, it sounds an alarm. The instrument, which comes with a Velcro strap, should be kept out of the shade, and Oregon Scientific recommends fastening it to a backpack. It does extra service as a clock and a thermometer.
